Decodable Book 3

Rose's Birthday

Rose the mole is very excited about her birthday. She goes to meet her friends to skate, but when she gets there she does not see them. Where could they be?
This book focuses on the long o specifically in the Vce pattern.  It is number 43 in the series.

Rating 5 out of 5 stars for decodable books.  This decodable book is almost like a real story. There is a plot and somewhat of a story line. Although the book focuses on long o, there are lots of other long letter sounds represented like long a, so the words are varied and not all "o" words.

Decodable Book 2

Big Bad Bat

The big bad bat is following Bob. Will the bat get Bob?
This is number 17 in the series and looks at the consonant sound /b/ and the letter B.

Rating 3 out of 5 stars for decodable books.  This book was kind of confusing for me because there were a lot of "not"s in the story. I had to keep up with what was not happening although the pictures helped to tell the story.  I think the story could have been stated without the "not"s.

Sector 7

This is a wordless picture book (which has also won the Caldecott Honor) about a school trip.  On this day at the top of the Empire State building it is very cloudy, so one little boy makes friends with a cloud.  When the sun starts to come out the cloud takes the boy to Sector 7- the cloud factory.  Sector 7 is where clouds all get their shape and assignments, no longer excited by the ordinary shapes the boy begins to draw new cloud designs until he is found.  What will happen to the clouds and the boy? Read this story to find out.

Rating: 5 out of 5.  This story has great pictures and lots of imagination.  it also encourages kids to look up at the sky and create different images of clouds.  It takes an everyday thing (cloud) and makes it come alive.

The Secret Box

This is a wordless picture book which tells the story of a young boy seems  to hide things away in a secret box at a house.  Over the years the city changes and grows, until one day another group of children find the box.  The box seems to be a map of some sort.  These children decide to follow the map, read this story to see what they find where the map ends.

Rating 5 out 5 stars.  This is great type of book because children can predict and make up the story for themselves.  This particular book has very beautiful pictures and shows how some places and things change over time.

Wordless Book 1

A Boy, A Dog, and A Frog

When looking at wordless picture books I chose this one because I always loved Mercer Mayer as an author with the Little Critter series. This is definitely an older book probably from the beginning of wordless picture books.
It shows the story of a day when a boy and his dog want to go frog catching.  The boy and his dog try very hard to catch the frog who keeps hopping out of reach.  Check out this story to see if they catch the frog.

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars. This story is very simple for young children and only has one picture per page, which makes it easier for very young kids to focus on what is happening since there are no words.  However, the book has very little color and small pictures that do not stretch on the whole page.

Board Book 3

Polar Bear, Polar Bear, What Do You Hear?

Following the book "Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?" this story is a sequel but talks about the sounds different animals make. The animals presented in this book are not the typical animals toddlers may know; these animals are more exotic and make very distinct sounds. Find out what the Polar Bear hears in this board book.

Rating 5 out of 5 stars. This is a perfect example of a board book for toddlers.  It has limited but rhyming words, lots of pictures, and sounds children can imitate.

Baby Angels

This board book follows a toddler throughout her day.  With every move there are baby angels watching out and protecting the child.  It is a simple rhyming prayer book.  When the toddler starts to get into trouble do you think the baby angels will help?

Rating 4 out of 5 stars.  For a board book, I believe this is a great way to teach children to read and about prayer.

The Monster at the End of this Book

This is a cute board book starring Grover from Sesame Street. In the book, after Grover reads the title, he tries to stop you from turning pages to get to the end of the book. You will have to read this book to find out if there is a monster at the end.

Rating 2 out of 5 stars. This books is a cute story for toddlers and has nice easy to read dialogue bubbles, however, there is a little content especially any meaningful content. Children will probably enjoy this book because they know Grover from seeing him on television.
